Failure is learning and a critical part of any kind of self-development that you undertake. They should be demotivated by telling them that they failed. Instead, re-frame the discussion. Look at what they done well, and what could be done better. Rather than talking in absolutes like failure and success, talk in more helpful, genuine language instead.
